Selaginella apoda, also known as meadow spikemoss or creeping spikemoss, is a fascinating, low-growing, fern-like plant that belongs to the Selaginellaceae family. It’s native to eastern and central North America and often found in moist, shady environments. It's considered a "resurrection plant" due to its ability to survive periods of dryness by going dormant and reviving when rehydrated.
Plant Care Tips:
*1. Light:
Prefers indirect light or shade.Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate fronds.
*2. Water:
Keep soil consistently moist, but not soggy.Use distilled or rainwater if possible, as it’s sensitive to salts and chemicals in tap water.
*3. Humidity:
Loves high humidity (60%+ is ideal).Mist regularly or place a humidity tray nearby.A terrarium is a great option for indoor growing.
*4. Temperature:
Prefers cool to moderate temperatures: 60–75°F (15–24°C).Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature drops.
*5. Soil:
Use a well-draining, rich organic mix.A mix of peat moss, perlite, and compost works well.
*6. Fertilizer:
Fertilize sparingly – once a month in spring/summer with a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer (at ¼ strength). No need to fertilize in fall and winter.
*7. Pruning:
Trim back leggy or dead growth to encourage fuller, denser growth.
*8. Propagation:
Can be propagated by division or stem cuttings.
